Social tennis nights for adults in Christchurch: where you can just turn up

Where adults can join social doubles in Christchurch without a team: Te Kura Hagley Park, Burwood, St Albans and Waimairi, with days, times and what it costs.

You don't need a team, a course or a regular partner to play tennis on a Wednesday night. Four Christchurch clubs run social tennis you can turn up to without a team.

Te Kura Hagley Park

Hagley Park Social Tennis is the one that looks most like a drop-in. It's organised on Meetup: Wednesdays 6 to 8pm at the club off Riccarton Ave, and Saturdays from 1pm (the Meetup listing says where). The social is $10 a head, paid the way the Meetup listing says (it currently asks for cash), and members of the club play free. You do need to know the basics: serve, rally, keep score. Beyond that all levels are fine.

There's no booking step as such. If the weather turns, the Meetup listing points you to the club's Facebook page for cancellations.

Burwood Park

Four sessions a week: Saturdays 12 to 5pm, Tuesdays 10am to 11:30am, Wednesdays 5 to 7pm and Thursdays 5:30 to 8pm. Wednesday and Thursday run under LED lights on courts 1 to 4. You turn up and they match you into doubles; singles can be arranged. Non-members get up to three sessions free. The page doesn't say what it costs after that.

St Albans

Senior social tennis (senior means adult grade, not older players) is Wednesdays at 6pm, back from 30 September, plus Thursday afternoons at 1:30pm. The club's page lists Saturday too, so check first. The club offers a free first trial. If you carry on as a visitor, the club's page sets $5 a session in the drop-box by the courts, but visitors have to play as a guest of a paid-up senior member and are capped at five sessions a season. Good for trying the club, less so for regular casual play.

Waimairi

Waimairi runs Saturday afternoon play, 1:30 to 4pm, and Wednesday evenings, 6:30 to 8:30pm, with a computer matching you with players of a similar level. The page offers a free trial but doesn't say whether non-members can join those two, so ring to check.

Tuesday mornings, 9:30 to 11:30am, are open to everyone, members or not. $10 court fee, and there are loan racquets.

Which one

If you work days and want a no-strings try, Hagley Park on a Wednesday or Burwood's three free goes are the easiest. If you're thinking about joining a club anyway, St Albans' free trial is the cheapest way to find out. Waimairi is the one to ring first on a weeknight.

Clubs that let non-members book a court are the other route, but then you still need someone to hit with.

Social nights solve that if you can get there at that time, every week. A lot of people can't: shifts, a different night each week. You end up with a fixed slot that fits one person's calendar, and a group that's mixed levels by design.
