The Christchurch coaches who publish a price charge from $45 to about $100 an hour for a one-on-one lesson.
The ones with a published price
St Albans charges $60 an hour for 1-1 coaching, and you don't have to be a member.
Elmwood's coach, Sam Keenan, charges $80 a session for one or two players. Bring a friend and it's $40 each. Three players is $90, and four or more is $25 a head, which starts to look like a group lesson.
At Waimairi, Hooked on Tennis lists private lessons from $45 an hour, and Waimairi members get a discount. "From" is doing some work there, so ask which coach and which slot the $45 is for.
Meredith Brothers, on Valley Road in Cashmere, sells a 90 minute private lesson for $150. That works out at $100 an hour.
The ones that don't
Bishopdale offers 30, 45 and 60 minute privates on request, and the price isn't listed. You text the coach.
If your club's site doesn't list a price either, message the coach.
Group or private
Two players splitting $80 is $40 each, which is close to what a good group session costs per person. If you have a regular hitting partner at about your level, that's the version to look at first.
Private makes sense when you know what's wrong. A serve that won't go in, a backhand that falls apart under pressure. If you're brand new, the adult beginner courses cost a fraction per session and you get other people to hit with.
What it actually buys
An hour with a coach fixes a stroke. It doesn't give you someone to play on Thursday.
You get a bit better, and then you still need somebody at your level who's free when you are. Hitter is for that part. More at hitter.nz.
