Auckland has more tennis courts than any other NZ city. Makes sense: biggest population, best weather, most demand. The flip side is competition. Popular venues fill up, especially on weekends.
The city stretches across a massive area, so "Auckland tennis" really means different things depending on whether you're in Ponsonby or Papakura. Most players stick to their local clubs, venturing further only for tournaments or to visit friends.
Central and inner suburbs
The central suburbs have excellent clubs with a mix of social and competitive options. These venues tend to be well-maintained, well-located, and busy. Expect to book ahead for weekend slots.
Membership costs more at premium central clubs, but you're paying for quality courts, strong coaching programs, and a larger pool of players to hit with.
North Shore
The Shore has a strong tennis culture with multiple quality clubs. Slightly more relaxed vibe than some central clubs, excellent for families and social players. Facilities are generally good, with several venues having undergone recent upgrades.
South and East Auckland
Often overlooked but worth exploring. Courts are easier to get, memberships cheaper, and communities welcoming. If you're in these areas, you don't need to trek to central suburbs for good tennis.
West Auckland
Laid-back atmosphere, solid facilities, friendly clubs. Less pretention than some inner-city venues. Good option for players who prioritise community over prestige.
Finding your fit
Visit clubs before joining. Every club has its own personality. Some are intensely competitive, others purely social. The "best" club is the one that matches what you're looking for.
Ask about trial memberships. Most clubs offer them. Play some social tennis, meet the members, and see if you'd enjoy spending time there.
